Categorical perception reflects non-basic color categories

چکیده

Categories can affect our perception of the world, rendering between-category differences more salient than withincategory ones — a phenomenon known as categorical perception (CP). Previous research has shown that basic color categories across a variety of languages yield CP in speakers of those languages. Here, we provide evidence that CP generalizes to color categories beyond the basic level. Specifically, we show CP in English speakers for categories corresponding to the non-basic, non-color-specific terms ”warm” and ”cool,” a distinction claimed to represent the earliest stage of color lexicon evolution. Notably, we found CP for the warm-cool distinction in the right visual field, but not the left — the same behavioral signature previously observed for basic color categories. Our findings suggest that category distinctions beyond the basic-level repertoire of one’s native language can be sufficiently salient to affect perceptual discrimination, and hence merit greater categorical status in the mind than previously recognized.

Categorical sensitivity to color differences.

Categorical perception provides a potential link between color perception and the linguistic categories that correspond to the basic color terms. We examined whether the sensory information of the second-stage chromatic mechanisms is further processed so that sensitivity for color differences yields categorical perception. In this case, sensitivity for color differences should be higher across ...

Categorical Perception Beyond the Basic Level: The Case of Warm and Cool Colors

Categories can affect our perception of the world, rendering between-category differences more salient than within-category ones. Across many studies, such categorical perception (CP) has been observed for the basic-level categories of one's native language. Other research points to categorical distinctions beyond the basic level, but it does not demonstrate CP for such distinctions. Here we pr...

Color categories are not universal: replications and new evidence from a stone-age culture.

The authors sought to replicate and extend the work of E. Rosch Heider (1972) on the Dani with a comparable group from Papua, New Guinea, who speak Berinmo, which has 5 basic color terms. Naming and memory for highly saturated focal, non-focal, and low-saturation stimuli from around the color space were investigated. Recognition of desaturated colors was affected by color vocabulary. When respo...

Language is not necessary for color categories.

The origin of color categories is under debate. Some researchers argue that color categories are linguistically constructed, while others claim they have a pre-linguistic, and possibly even innate, basis. Although there is some evidence that 4-6-month-old infants respond categorically to color, these empirical results have been challenged in recent years. First, it has been claimed that previou...

Acquisition of categorical color perception: a perceptual learning approach to the linguistic relativity hypothesis.

Color perception can be categorical: Between-category discriminations are more accurate than equivalent within-category discriminations. The effects could be inherited, learned, or both. The authors provide evidence that supports the possibility of learned categorical perception (CP). Experiment 1 demonstrated that observers' color discrimination is flexible and improves through repeated practi...
